Six Degrees of Separation Can Help Grow Your Business

The connection between you and your ideal client is just six people away.

In 2006, researchers at Microsoft studied records of 30 billion conversations among 180 million people, and they discovered something incredible. Any person is linked to another through roughly six people – the six degrees of separation.

Six Degrees of Separation means a connection between you, the Dalai Lama, the Queen, or the Prime Minister, which is just six people away.

Six Degrees of Separation means you are already connected to plenty of people who could benefit from your help.

A more fun example was the game The Oracle of Bacon, created by Hollywood actor Kevin Bacon, who believes he can be linked to any other Hollywood actor within six steps.

So, how can you use Bacon’s law to grow your business?

1. Identify Your Top Ten Business Contacts

Make a list of the ten people in your network who you think might be able to help you or know someone who would benefit from your products or services.

2. Speak to Your Top Ten Business Contacts

Opportunity comes from putting yourself out there, and the quickest way to grow your business is to speak to people that already know you, like you and trust you.

3. Ask for Business Introductions

Referred prospects close at a significantly higher rate. So, if you’re eyeing a client that someone in your network knows, don’t hesitate to ask for an introduction.
