Networking in…with Chris White
On Wednesday 6th September, we were honoured to be joined by guest speaker Chris White at Networking-in.
He was speaking to us about “Cybersecurity awareness training for small businesses.”
The session was all sorts of INSIGHTFUL!
People tend to see cybersecurity as mysterious, complex, expensive, and uncomfortable. But Chris demystified all of this.
The statistics are scary! 52% of all crime in the UK happens online, and the average age of the offender is only 16 years old. Ironically, with the right systems, 90% of all cybercrime is AVOIDABLE.
Chris offered lots of value. Here are some of the things that you can do to reduce risk:
-Back up your data and keep all your devices up to date.
-Use multiple-factor authentication. Passwords should be at least 8 characters long if you have 2FA, and 12 characters long if you don’t.
-Download a free information pack to make some small easy changes to protect yourself both personally and professionally.
-Use haveibeenpwned.com to see if your email address or phone number is compromised.
– Text 7726 (‘SPAM’ on your phone dial pad) to forward and report any dodgy messages. (They’ll disconnect the number and take down any website).
– Set up the inbuilt admin/user settings on your laptop/PC and only use the admin account when actively making changes or downloading.
-Use Bitlocker to mitigate unauthorized data access on lost or stolen computers.
We’ve got lots of great speakers lined up for the rest of the year.
