On Wednesday at Networking in… we had the pleasure of hearing from Helen Joy of People Spark. Her talk was on “Recruitment 101: Making the leap”
Helen touched on some very important points from when you first have the thought of recruiting to actually doing it.
How to tell if you need to recruit
Are you stuck?
Are you or your customers frustrated?
Are you missing out on opportunities?
Are you losing money?
Are you stressed or burnt out?
How to identify what you need to recruit for
What skills are you missing in your business?
Write down all things you must do to deliver to your customer exceptionally. Next to each one, write down the skills it takes to achieve that.
Group all the same ones together and score them out of 10 where you’d like them to be.
Score where they are now. That ga is what you need to fill.
The Recruitment Market
It’s tough right now. In a small business, you also need to sell the benefits and opportunities.
You also have to consider the generations. Are you looking to hire Maturists, Baby Boomers, Generation X, Generation Y, or Generation Z?
The different generations have specific characteristics, and you need to be aware of them.
Preparing to interview
You need to know exactly what you’re looking for and why.
Don’t fall into the emotions trap. Use a genuine business issue as an example and explore how they would approach it.
