In Alice in Wonderland, Alice meets the Cheshire Cat and asks him for directions-
She says, “Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?”
To which the Cheshire Cat replies, “That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.”
Alice: “I don’t much care where…so long as I get somewhere.”
The Cheshire Cat: “Then it doesn’t much matter which way you go, you’re sure to get there, if only you walk long enough.”
If, like Alice, you don’t know where you’re going, you will find it difficult to get anywhere meaningful; you’ll get lost in the current and fall victim to your impulses (most of which will take you further and further away from success).
Having a purpose and direction, however, will help guide your energy on actions that will move you closer to your goals. You’ll find it a lot easier to make decisions pertaining to your life or business and anytime you come across a bump or a fork on the road, having your final destination in mind should give you the motivation to keep moving forward.
We have a range of tools to help you understand where you want to get to. A quick and easy worksheet is our Circle of Life template, this will help you get to grips quickly with what you feel you’re missing in your life, and where you might need to focus.
Figuring out where you want to go is the first step – what does life look for you in 5 years, 10 years? When do you hope to retire? Work backwards from there, and break it down.
