Networking in…with Alex Tatham

The first Networking in…session of the year was a BLAST!

We kicked things off by celebrating our wins from 2023, and let me tell you, it was incredibly inspiring to hear everyone’s success stories.

The highlight of the session was the talk by Alex Tatham on “How to Be Useful’

He dropped some wisdom from Arnold Schwarzenegger’s book that hit home for us at Outside Ideas. Alex emphasized the power of collaboration and learning from one another.

He passionately spoke about ditching the Plan B, pushing us to operate without a safety net. According to him, that’s the key to being brave, thinking big, ignoring the naysayers, and breaking records!

How To Be Useful

Here are the seven rules he talked of:

1. Have a Clear Vision

Find clear purpose and meaning in your work.

Start broad and then Zoom in.

Get in shape!

2. Never Think Small

You don’t need to have a Plan B. A safety net will confine you.

Be brave, ignore the naysayers, and break records!

3. Work Your Ass Off

Pain is temporary. Work hard! You can always make time for the things that matter to you.

4. Sell! Sell! Sell!

Talk to journalists and be active on social media. Own your story, and let people underestimate you.

5. Shift Gears

Focus on the positive.

Reframe failure – Embrace it!

You’re not allowed to say “That’s the way we’ve always done it.”

6. Shut your mouth, open your mind

Be curious – Ask questions, seek advice, listen!

Be a sponge.

7. Break Your Mirrors

Don’t look at yourself, look at others.

Everyone benefits from giving back. Be team-spirited.

All of us have had help and guidance or examples of role models. Be a role model to someone.
